making strawberry vinegar from scratch?! #homemaker #fermentedfoods #learningnewskills
Today I'm following a tutorial from @thewildcarrotfarmstead to make strawberry vinegar. Tonya posted an Instagram reel about it too, which is where I first saw this.

PS: I attempted this a little while ago, and took the thumbnail photo then. I later realized my conversions were off, so I made a new batch, which is what I filmed here.

🍅🥬🌽🥕🫑 NEW vegetable garden update June 2024
Переглядів 3614 днів тому
Here is a quick update on my vegetable gardens for June 2024. The preserving garden is up first, but it's half the size this year. We are giving the other half a rest and implementing some regenerative practices to improve soil health. 🌻 Blog: www.ourwoodhome.wordpress.com 🌻 Instagram: our_wood_home 🌻 Shop on IG: mrsflemingshomegoods 🌻 Pinterest: www.pinterest.ca/our...

Let's make a really easy spruce tip syrup recipe. All you need is equal parts fresh new growth from spruce trees, sugar, and water. The spruce new growth will be fluffy, bright green, and sticky. It is usually present late May to early June in my growing zone of 5B. 🌲ONLY HARVEST IF YOU HAVE PERMISSION AND CAN PROPERLY IDENTIFY THE SPRUCE TREE. Never harvest more than 1/3 of the tree.🌲 🌻 Blog: ...

    Actually not misleading since the boiling water was so hot the putting the lid on it will seal itself it causes a vacuum it is called hot pressing very different from water bathing or pressure only works with the boiling of the water or whatever liquid you have being so hot

    That is such a great way to use strawberry tops that normally don’t get used :)

      I agree! Normally my chickens get them as a snack but they can eat them later when I strain out the finished vinegar.

    What do you do with it after the 5 weeks - do you keep on counter, put it in frig, feeding it or use it all then start over? What happens next for those of us who never tried before.

    • @ChristinaOurWoodHome
      @ChristinaOurWoodHome 19 годин тому

      After 5 weeks it is ready to bake bread. If you plan to bake bread every few days, leave in on the counter and continue feeding it once per day. If you don't want to bake bread daily, you can put the starter into the fridge. A couple days before you plan to bake, take it out and feed it a few times to boost it back up (it kind of goes dormant in the fridge due to the cold air).

    Can you explain what the discard can is? Are you keeping that or tossing it? What is it? Can it be used?

    • @ChristinaOurWoodHome
      @ChristinaOurWoodHome 19 годин тому

      the discard is a portion of the starter we remove so there is less competition for food. if we didn't discard, we would have to feed more and more flour and water to the starter, because it would keep getting larger in volume. The discard goes into a container in the fridge and can be used in baked goods. It will not have any leavening power but it adds a nice flavour. The discard can be thrown away but I prefer to save it.

    My berries are frozen. Any tips on how to can them from that state? I want to can some strawberries and blueberries. Both, currently frozen.

      You can safely can frozen berries! Just be sure to thaw them first. Typically, home canned berries end up mushy for me so be aware of that if you plan to can frozen then thawed berries. They might be even mushier for you.

    I love your garden!!! 🌱🌱🌱 My first pumpkin flower is blooming and it's so beautiful 🤗 it's my first time planting pumpkin seeds. My tomatoes and peppers are still very tiny, I wonder if I waited too long to plant them, but here in Southern California I probably have until November before the first frost 🙏🏻 Have you ever planted popcorn kernels? My chamomile seeds didn't take it. My zucchini and butternut squash plants are looking wonderful 🙏🏻 We have blueberries and raspberries slowly coming 🫐🥳 I love seeing your garden ❤️

      thanks Carol! Very exciting that your pumpkin is flowering! I'm sure you will get a good harvest before frost, since there is still lots of time🤗 I have not planted popcorn kernels because I heard they may be treated with something that stops them from germinating. The seeds I planted for my popping corn this year are pink, which I think is so fun! I hope your garden does well this year and you have lots of goodies to harvest💕
